Elmira Memorial Forest

Mission

A Memorial Tree may be planted or Memorial Bench may be installed in memory of a loved one through this program regardless of when/where the death occurred, or where the funeral service was held. We envision that the Elmira Memorial Forest will continue for many years and our hope is that this living forest and these benches will be of comfort and benefit to all.

Purpose

The purpose of our Memorial Forest Program is to provide an opportunity to commemorate the life of a loved one; in a special way, by planting a tree or installing a bench.

A Living Memorial

Each tree or bench in this natural forest will be in memory of or donated by a local citizen. A tree symbolizes strength, shelter and durability. By planting a tree it is a symbol of hope, a sign of a new beginning and a living tribute. It will be a source of comfort and meaning to those who have suffered a loss. As one life ends, a new life begins. A bench provides a resting spot for those who walk on our trails. It will be a source of comfort and meaning to those travelling along our trails as well as a source of comfort and meaning to those who have suffered a loss.

The Memorial Forest Program not only pays a significant tribute to the memory of loved ones, but also assures a better environment for generations to come. The Program was initiated on September 1, 1999 and great interest has been expressed. The first tree was planted by the Elmira Lions Club in memory of Mae Moser, a well-known and very generous lady who passed away in 1997. A request for our first Memorial Bench was received sometime later.

Where will the trees be planted or the benches be installed?

The Elmira Lions Memorial Forest is located along the Kissing Bridge Trail Way adjacent to Snyder Avenue North and along the NE section of Lions Ring Trail. Because it is located adjacent to the Trail way, it is easily accessible for walkers, hikers and bicyclists as well as by automobile from Snyder Avenue North.
